Panish | Shea | Ravipudi LLP Obtains $1.4 Million Jury Verdict for Man Permanently Injured by Mower-Launched Golf Ball

A Los Angeles County jury awarded $1.4 million to Thomas Graham after a golf ball propelled by a mower at Heartwell Golf Course caused permanent damage to his left eye. American Golf Corporation admitted liability prior to trial, leaving the jury to determine damages. Panish | Shea | Ravipudi LLP attorneys Jon Davidi, Dan Dunbar, and Brigitta Cymerint represented Mr. Graham in the case and at trial.

The case arose from a June 14, 2024 incident at Heartwell Golf Course in Long Beach, a facility operated by American Golf Corporation. A golf ball—traveling at an estimated 200 miles per hour—was launched by a mower operating near the course’s on-site café. The ball shattered the café’s glass, which then struck Mr. Graham in his left eye. Evidence showed that the mowing equipment used by the defendant was outdated and lacked basic safety features, including deflectors that would have prevented the ball from being projected toward the café area.

As a result of American Golf Corporation’s negligence, Mr. Graham suffered severe, permanent damage to the cornea and nerves in his left eye, leading to ongoing pain and functional impairment. He developed chronic symptoms including a persistent foreign body sensation in his eye, daily discomfort, redness, and severe headaches that at times escalate into migraines. The evidence showed that these symptoms have continued from the date of the incident through the present and are expected to persist into the future.

At trial, jurors heard testimony regarding the profound impact the injury has had on Mr. Graham’s daily life. Once active and engaged, he now faces ongoing pain, reduced enjoyment of activities, and significant lifestyle changes as a result of his condition.

“This verdict reflects the jury’s recognition of the very real and lasting harm Mr. Graham has endured,” said Jon Davidi, counsel for Mr. Graham. “While liability was admitted, the defense contested the extent of his injuries. The jury carefully considered the evidence and returned a verdict that fully acknowledges the seriousness of what he continues to live with every day.”

The case centered on the lasting effects of corneal nerve damage—an injury that can result in chronic pain and persistent symptoms despite the absence of visible foreign material. Medical testimony established that while the initial injury may appear minor, the long-term consequences can be significant and life-altering.

“We are proud to have represented Mr. Graham in his pursuit of accountability and justice,” Brigitta Cymerint added. “This verdict affirms that even injuries that are not outwardly visible can have a profound and permanent impact on a person’s life.”
