The city of Mitchell, South Dakota has been pursuing the passage of a texting while driving ban for quite awhile now, but their efforts were put on hold as they awaited a decision at the state level on such a measure. But now that a statewide ban has failed, the City Council is looking into a texting ban with a renewed fervor. This past Monday, the first reading was carried out on a measure that would outlaw texting at the wheel in Mitchell. Using the previously considered statewide ban as a template, the new bill passed its initial reading by a 5 to 3 margin. The city’s Public Safety Chief spoke about how he would erect road signage to inform drivers about the ban should the law reach eventual passage.
